Guilford Tech Weekend Wrap-up (Feb 8-9)
The #6 Bucs took on Division I Guilford Tech in a four game series this past weekend and walked away with the series sweep. Pitching and defense again ruled the weekend for the Bucs as they moved to 6-1 on the year.
The first two games of the slate were played on Saturday at the Bucs home field. The Bucs jumped on the Titans from Guilford Tech early putting 7 runs up in the first inning. This blow was just too much for the Titans as the Bucs went on to win Game 1 by a score of 9-3. Landon Fraley (1-0) earned the win only allowing 3 runs on 5 hits. Sophomore Bryson Bowman led the way offensively going 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Redshirt Sophomore Colby Dischmond added 2 RBIs on 2 hits and Sophomore Kurt Stabasefski gathered 2 hits as well.
Game 2 saw a pitching masterpiece from Freshman Justin Norton (1-1). Norton threw a complete game, 1 hit shutout and was dominant the entire game. Norton had 7 strikeouts and 0 walks. The returning sophomores led the way offensively and the Bucs won Game 2 by a score of 4-0. Bryson Bowman again went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Captain Sophomore Ryan Smith also went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kurt Stabasefski went 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.
Games 3 and 4 were played on Sunday in Greensboro as the Bucs hit the road for the first time this season. The Bucs found the road a very fitting place as they displayed a dominant performance in Game 3 beating the Titans 14-0. The offense shined in this game however, pitching and defense stole the show. Sophomore Dustin Greene (1-0) was credited with the win but it was the combined effort of all the pitchers in Game 1 that had the Bucnation fans in attendance on the edge of their seats. Redshirt Freshman Brandon Norton, Dustin Greene, Sophomore Dallas Connor, and Sophomore Alex Embler combined for no hitter for the Bucs. (There will be more on the effort from this group later in the week on their special day.) Colby Dischmond led the way offensively for the Bucs going 2 for 2 with a homerun and 2 RBIs, Bryson Bowman went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, and both Ryan Smith and Kurt Stabasefski went 2 for 4.
Sophomore Dustin Batson (1-0) took the mound for the Bucs in Game 4 and only gave up 1 run on 4 hits. Batson earned the victory as the Bucs took Game 4 by a score of 4-1. Redshirt Freshman Shane Denton earned the 6 out save as he came in and shut the door on the Titan offense. The Bucs were led offensively again by Colby Dischmond who went 1 for 1 with 2 RBIs and Bryson Bowman who went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Bryson Bowman earned Player of the Week honors by going 8 for 13 with 7 RBIs. The South Caldwell product and Western Carolina commit provided an offensive spark to the team including timely hits and played exceptional defense all weekend.
The Bucs defense, in total, has only had 1 error through 7 games.
The Bucs are waiting to see when there next game will be as Cuyahoga Community College cancelled their upcoming series with the Bucs due to weather. If the Bucs are unable to find an opponent for next weekend’s games, their next game will be February 19th at Limestone College.
