Catawba Valley Community College faculty member Jonathan Loss has been named Mathematics Department Head.
After serving on the mathematics faculty for 10 years, Loss brings excellent leadership skills to the new post as a recent graduate of the inaugural Phillips Leadership Academy and year-long North Carolina Community College System Leadership Program.
Loss has served with distinction on the Mathematics Curriculum Improvement Project (MCIP) Steering Committee for the North Carolina Community College System where he helped revolutionize the course offerings in community college math departments across the state. As a result of this work, he was invited to present the results of the MCIP to the State Board of Community Colleges last year.
Loss currently serves on two state committees. He is a member of the Transfer Advisory Committee, a group whose membership includes representatives from both the North Carolina Community College System and the North Carolina University System. The Transfer Advisory Committee meets on a regular basis to monitor and maintain the new Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. In addition, Loss has been selected to chair another NCCCS committee that is exploring ways to place students directly into Calculus I (MAT 271).
Loss earned a bachelor’s degree at Montreat College and a master’s degree at Appalachian State University.
He and his family live in Hickory.
