Turf industry professionals and golf course superintendents from the Southeast turned out in force for the Guy Hollar Memorial Golf Tournament held recently at Rock Barn Country Club & Spa in Conover, NC.
A scholarship fundraiser for Catawba Valley Community (Hickory, N.C.) College Turfgrass Management students, the tournament honors the legacy of Guy Hollar. He was in the first crop of CVCC Turfgrass Management graduates in 1972 and served for many years as golf course director of grounds at Rock Barn Golf and Spa before his untimely death in 2008.
Classmates and many turf professionals Hollar mentored as students organized the tournament in conjunction with CVCC’s Alumni Affairs Office. Hollar’s widow Marsha and daughter Heather Hollar Johnson attended.
“We are so grateful for the support of our Turfgrass Management alumni and their willingness to give back to the college,” said Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw, president of CVCC. “Their support enables us to continue to build on the foundation that they have created and make our program the best that it can be.”
Platinum Sponsors that helped cover green fees and lunch at Rock Barn included JRM., Inc. Innovative Turf Technology; Smith Turf & Irrigation; Revels Turf & Tractor, Tri-State Pump & Control; and NC State University Turfgrass Management Program.
Currently enrolled CVCC Turfgrass Management students worked with Rock Barn Golf Course Grounds Director and CVCC alumnus Ben Dietz on course preparation.
Twenty-four teams played in the Captain’s Choice tournament that included a morning and afternoon flight. The top teams were:
1st Place Tri-State Pump & Control Team
Ben Deitz-CVCC Turfgrass Alumnus
2nd Place Golf Agronomics Team
3rd Place Rock Barn Twosome
4th Place Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Assn. Team
