Catawba Valley Community College’s SkillsUSA team broke the North Carolina record they set last year by winning 18 championships in the recent state competition in Greensboro. These students will compete in the SkillsUSA National Conference Championships in Louisville in June.

Students competed in 30 events and earned top 10 finishes in every category they entered. They also earned outstanding finishes in several other competitions, including Engineering, Welding and Automotive Systems Technologies.

CVCC fielded individual and college teams as well as individuals and teams in the high school division with students enrolled in Challenger Early College High School housed on the CVCC campus and Hickory Career and Arts Magnet School.

The CVCC team won the Fantasy Hair and Make Up competition for the fifth year in a row. For the third straight year, the CVCC team won first place in the Entrepreneurship category. The college students were also joined by the high school team that won first place.

For the third straight year, the CVCC team won the Photography and Outstanding Chapter of the Year competitions. The Crime Scene Investigation, Firefighting, Public Speaking, Job interviewing and Quiz Bowl teams won for the second year in a row.
