CVCC’s Brice Melton Named Head of Social Sciences & Early Childhood Education Department

Melton has served as program director of Early Childhood Education since 2001, where she has been involved in advancing and expanding the curriculum.  Under Melton’s leadership, the CVCC Early Childhood Education Program recently earned accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

A graduate of Meredith College, she earned a master’s degree in education at Lenoir-Rhyne College and holds certifications in Birth to Kindergarten and Elementary Education teaching. She also earned certification as a Parent Educator from Parents as Teachers in St. Louis, Mo.

Melton taught preschool and kindergarten in the Catawba County Public School System before joining the CVCC faculty. She also served as an Early Childhood Leadership Consultant for Lenoir-Rhyne College and project coordinator for the Smart Start-funded Educational Enhancement Project at Caldwell Community College.

A Hickory native, Melton served as a member of Faculty Senate for several years, including serving as vice president and later president, as well as countless college committees.  In 2008, she received the CVCC Excellence in Teaching Award. She is a member of many professional and nonprofit organizations in Catawba and Alexander counties, including Alexander County Partnership for Children and Catawba County Children’s Resource Center.  She has served on the Board of Directors for Catawba County Children’s Advocacy Center and the Hickory Foundation YMCA. She is a graduate of the inaugural Phillips Leadership Academy and the N.C. Community College Leadership Program.

Melton has received numerous honors for her contributions to the profession of early childhood education, including the Meredith College Department of Psychology Distinguished Alumna Award in 2009.
